The 2010 – 2011 season was my third first full season, a season where I was keen to improve do some more racing. Having made it on to the GB development team I planed to spend three months in Winter Park, Colorado.
This was my first race event of the season, having arrived in Winter Park a couple of weeks before unfortunately this fell over the Christmas break which meant although I got out on the snow as much as possible I lacked the gate experience I would have liked before going in to this event.
Unfortunately I crashed in the Super-G event and as a result scored a DNF in my first race, something I wasn’t very happy with.
After the DNF the day before I was keen to finish this race, I completed the race but being too wary of crashing again meant that my result wasn’t what I wanted.
The basic goal of any race is to post the fastest time you can, but today I managed to come back from a difficult first run and post a time 10 seconds faster in my second run through better skiing. So although my result wasn’t great I’ve got plenty to be happy about with the future direction of my skiing.
It was great to be back in Kimberley to race again after training there for the previous two years. It was a pretty daunting prospect, I had a new sit-ski that I had only run with my Downhill and Super-G skis once before due to weather conditions. I was reasonably happy I had the right settings for my compression and rebound for my shock on my sit ski, but I would only know on the first Downhill training run.
The Downhill was certainly faster than the year before and we had pretty much the top 10 sit skiers in the world. I ran the course trying to follow the instructions from my coaches and relax. I ended up in 17th position, but I was only 15 seconds off the first place. It doesn’t sound great, but I crossed the finish line with a huge smile on my face, it was a great feeling to get the first Downhill out of the way.
The second Downhill race took place later that day; again the course was super fast. I ended up in 14th place but I was 17 seconds off the pace. I’m not sure while I lost a few seconds on the second run, but again it was a finish that had me smiling.
I wasn’t too happy with my result for the Super-G 1 race; it was a fast course that could have been a Downhill race on another hill. But I managed to finish the race in 15th position, but I was somewhat off the pace.
In the Super-G 2 race I had much more speed and was more relaxed while I raced the course, I managed to finish in 12th place but I did crash at the 3rd gate from the end. I managed to force my ski in to the soft snow during the crash and continue on. Without that crash I could have been much faster, but that’s ski racing.
