The 2009 – 2010 season was my second first full season, a season where I was keen to improve do some more racing. I spent 3 months in Kimberley again under the tuition of Steve Bova at his racing academy.
Again I met some fantastic people there and had a great season where I saw my skiing moving up a gear all the time, thanks to all the support and guidance I got.
This was to be my first downhill race, which I was pretty nervous about but I knew the hill and just had to get over my mind telling me I was going too fast.
The first race was loads of fun, but I knew I could go a lot faster, I pretty much had the same time as my clean practice run but it felt so much slower in critical areas. When I entered some flat sections I didn’t make the most of the speed I could have carried. But I finished the race clocking almost 90kph at the finish line; I was happy with this as its not factored and was in the mix with everyone else.
All week the steeper sections of the course had been giving me no problems, it was the blind corners that I was having problems with, and these were all at the top of the course. I knew if I could take these well I would have a good run. Sometime plans don’t work out like you want them to, I made all the gates as I wanted to, but when I came down the steeper section I was slightly off line, leaned in to the corner and crashed. It would have taken someone to grab me and throw me off the course for me not to finish. I got up and headed back to the track, I didn’t miss any gates so I was good to go. I was last, but I was going to finished!
I was a little disappointed with my first run, there were lots of places to make up time and I just didn’t take advantage of them. By now the starting gates were a little more familiar, physically and mentally the week was taking its toll.
I completed the top section and was carrying lots of speed; I entered the flats taking air at the small jump. I knew I was faster at this point, I skied the flats well not loosing as much speed as last time. I exited them down a small pitch that had caused me no problems before, while my sit ski launched over this I was looking at the next gate to take. Suddenly a landing that shouldn’t have been any problem turned in to a rollercoaster ride that I had no control over. I bounced to a stop looking back up the course; my ski had come off my sit ski when I landed. I was gutted, stuck on the course without my ski, race over, DNF.
